Korcula Poplat
The
cove of Poplat is one of the many coves in Vela Luka’s bay, that
is situated southwest from the place Vela Luka. There’s a road from
Vela Luka which leads to the south part of the island of Korcula.
The road goes through the wood of the pine trees,
oliveyards and the village Potirna, that has been cultivated and
populated since prehistoric times. The cove of Poplat, with its
surroundings, is charasteristic Mediterranean landscape. It has
2 smaller bays – Vela Lucica and Mala Lucica, and fields. The coves
are full of pebbles and the woods of the pine trees, extending to
them.
The majority of the field is cultivated and planted
with grapevines, olives and other vegetables. What it bears witness
to the importance of man’s presence and to this part of Vela Luka’s
bay, too, are:
The small church Gospa Karmelska, built in 1888 in the field itself,
and the chapel which is dedicated to Saint Antun, built in 2002.
The charasteristic stone walls and small stony houses.
-
The Villa Rustica from the Roman times.

is situated far from the cities and urban middle, which enables

Vela Luka
Vela
Luka (4464 inhabitants) is the biggest town on the island and is
42 km far away from the town of Korcula. Vela Luka is the oldest
and the youngest settlement on the island at the same time. On the
hill spilinski rat, Northeast of the village, on about 100 m attitude
above sea-level, is the Vela Spila (the big cave) - the most significant
pre-historic deposit of Korcula. the rich Neolithic culture of the
“Circle of Hvar” (3200 before Christ) communicated over sea with
the neighbours of the Adriatic and the Mediterranean. The attractive
collection of discoveries is exhibited in the Homeland museum in
the Palace Franulovic-Repak near the parish church.
Vela Luka developed at the beginning of the 19th century in a deep,
protected bay. Beside houses there are a few hotels and the rehabilitation
centre for rheumatic diseases and posttraumatical conditions “Kalos”.
The population is dealing with agriculture, fishing, tourism and
there is the shipyard “Greben”, the fishprocessing factory “Jadranka”
and other smaller industrial and farm plants.
Korcula Island
Korcula Island undoubtedly holds a privileged position among Croatian
islands. Here are perhaps even more legends, tales and monuments
than anywhere else. The island has a number of famous towns including
Korcula, Lumbarda and Vela Luka. The oldest written monument in
Croatia, the "Lumbardska psefizma", in Greek, was found in Lumbarda.
According to legend, Korcula was established by the Trojan hero
Anthenor in the 12th century BC. Korcula is, after Lokrum and Mljet,
the third most densely wooded island of Croatia.
There is much evidence of a highly-developed social life on Korcula
even in the 13th century. The Statute of Korcula, signed in 1214,
prohibited the slave trade for the first time in Europe. It also
spoke about the order and management of the city. The famous travel
writer, Marco Polo, was, according to some sources, born in Korcula. The
people of Korcula were famous stonemasons, shipbuilders and seafarers.
They left their mark in stoneworks, sculptures and buildings all
over Dalmatia, but they saved their best works for their own city.
In its long history, the town streets, laid out in a regular herringbone
pattern, have seen many battles. Nowadays, each summer they come
to life with the old knights dance of Moreska, dating from the 15th
century.
The dance evokes the battles with the Moors and was popular all
over the Mediterranean. But today it has only been preserved on
the island Korcula. Representing good and evil, the white and black
kings fight with their armies for a maiden. Fortunately the white
king prevails. In Blato, situated like Rome on seven hills, there
is another, equally interesting knights dance called "Kumpanija"
(company). It symbolizes the struggle for freedom.
